Grammer 11+ Preparation

Year 4 and Year 5

  • Description

Here at Handsworth Education Academy our 11+ lessons are open to children in Years 3,4 & 5, with the actual test being held at the end of year 5. Our lessons are small group based sessions and we work with both CL and CEM formats. We regularly perform past papers under test-like conditions where knowledge and speed are assessed. The results of which are taken, recorded and used to help your child’s progression and give them the best possible chance of passing.

WHAT IS THE 11 PLUS ENTRANCE EXAM?

The 11 Plus Entrance Exam has been a feature of the English education system for decades. Historically there was a two tier system in state education with the top 25% being taken into Grammar Schools and the remainder going forward to Secondary Modern schools.

The system changed in the late seventies and most Grammar Schools were abolished when the system became non-selective. This was the dawn of The Comprehensive Education System.

In some areas, however, the local preference was to retain Grammar Schools. There are 164 schools remaining, with some areas like Kent and Buckinghamshire maintaining a complete system and other areas having limited or no provision (look in the 11 Plus exam areas section to see what provision is like where you are).

Independent Schools also use entrance testing at 11 (also called the 11 Plus) to decide which students they take. This is quite normal in Independent Day Schools around the country.

The most common 11 plus exam formats are GL and CEM, and they are either Standard Format - where the answers are written in spaces next to the question - or Multiple Choice - where the answers are marked in a separate answer book. The test is split into 4 sections: Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

We cover both formats and the GL assessment covers the Birmingham consortium, while the CEM covers Shropshire, Walsall & Wolverhampton.

If you are a parent and would like your child to go to a grammar school in Birmingham, they will need to sit an entry test taken at the end of Year 5.. There is one entry test across all of Birmingham's grammar schools:

    • Bishop Vesey's Grammar School for Boys
    • King Edward VI Aston School
    • King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys
    • King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
    • King Edward VI Five Ways School
    • King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys
    • King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls
    • Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls

  • Format

The Format of the 11 Plus Entrance Test

The 11 Plus exam varies around the country and even from school to school, but it typically involves all or some of the tests in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Here at Handsworth Education Academy we enrol children into our 11+ Grammar school preparation courses at year 4. This gives each child a full 2 years of intensive learning of all 4 subjects they will need to pass the entrance test held in UK schools in the September at the end of year 5.

    • Verbal Reasoning
    • Non-Verbal Reasoning
    • English
    • Maths

We provide all the materials for your child whilst attending this course. They will also get access to our own unique website so that they can interact with and build their knowledge. In addition to this, we provide board and paper based learning along with past papers, speed tests and exam style conditions towards the end of the course in order to help each child navigate their way through the actual test when they sit it.

We also help parents with the form filling and the application process and our aim is to allow the whole process, from start to finish, be less confusing for all those involved.

We believe that any child can pass the Entrance test, no matter of background or experience, and have given countless families hope of securing their child with a better future.

We have an excellent pass rate with over 95% of our children passing the 2022 test alone.
